What happened?
Use the transaction status shown inside your UPI app or bank statement.
FAILED
Money was debited, but the payment failed
Open the transaction in your UPI app and use its report-issue or complaint option. NPCI states that failed debits should be reversed; contact your bank if the reversal does not arrive promptly.
Keep the transaction ID, amount, date and bank reference ready.
PENDING
The payment is still pending
Refresh or recheck the transaction status before paying again. Raise a complaint from the transaction history if the status does not resolve.
Avoid sending a duplicate payment while the first transaction remains unclear.
WRONG RECIPIENT
You paid the wrong person
A UPI payment cannot be stopped after it is initiated. Contact your UPI app and bank immediately with the transaction details and ask what recovery process is available.
Do not pay anyone who promises to recover the money for an advance fee.
UNRECOGNISED
You do not recognise the payment
Treat an unauthorised debit as urgent. Contact your bank, secure the account and report financial cyber fraud through 1930 or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
Preserve messages, screenshots and transaction references as evidence.
Escalate in this order
Keep the complaint reference from each step.
1
Start with the UPI app or bank
Open the transaction and raise the issue in the app. For an unauthorised transaction, contact the bank immediately through an official channel.
2
Use the NPCI complaint route
If needed, use the NPCI complaint portal with the relevant transaction and bank details.
3
Check RBI CMS eligibility
If the regulated entity rejects the complaint, gives an unsatisfactory response, or does not respond within 30 days, review the current rules and use the RBI Complaint Management System.
